REI, Airstream Double Down on ‘Basecamp 20X’ Travel Trailer
First, the good news: REI and Airstream’s second travel trailer collaboration looks even more capable and feature-rich than the original. The bad news: Its $60,000-plus price tag will not count toward your annual member rebate.
Still, for anyone whose ears perked up last year when the two brands announced their first-ever special-edition, off-road camper trailer, this year’s follow-up — the REI Co-op Special Edition Basecamp 20X — offers a larger floor plan that can accommodate even longer trips. And, in line with REI’s rigorous Impact Standards, an even greater eye toward sustainability and clean energy.
“Our partnership with REI is expanding at a time of unprecedented growth in the outdoor recreation space, alongside an urgent imperative to conserve and safeguard the outdoor spaces we cherish,” Airstream president and CEO Bob Wheeler said. “By extending our collaboration series with REI, this new 20-foot Basecamp allows us to serve more environmentally-conscious outdoor enthusiasts looking to upgrade their adventure.”
Here are the details on the latest REI x Airstream collaboration, and how to snag one for yourself.
REI Special-Edition Basecamp 20X Travel Trailer
While the previous REI co-branded trailer used the Airstream Basecamp’s 16-foot platform. As you might guess, the “20X” refers to this model’s larger 20-foot floor plan.
Also new with the 20X are a convertible front dinette that caters to shared meals or lounging, larger holding tanks to support longer trips away from civilization (2 extra gallons of freshwater capacity, and dedicated gray and wastewater tanks, versus the combined tanks in the 16-foot model), and a built-in floor cooler that doubles as wet storage. In the galley, the 20X shows off green slate countertops with exposed birch plywood.
